The tenth grade language arts curriculum focuses on students writing for a variety of topics using diverse sources. Writing instruction emphasizes vocabulary, accepted patterns of organization, development and support ideas and acceptable usage and mechanics, which prepares them for future studies and for the workplace. Students will analyze and evaluate major writing in world literature and read and respond to literature.
Students will have a brief grammar review before starting a composition program in which paragraph development, expository, descriptive, narrative and persuasive writing will be studied. Vocabulary worksheets and tests will be given each week. An oral or written report will be given each quarter over a book selected from an assigned list. Students will be required to do a research paper - MLA Style.
The composition section of the course includes essay writing, writing about literature (studied in class) and writing research papers using MLA guidelines. English Literature written from "Beowulf" through the 1900's will be studied. Vocabulary worksheets and tests will be given each week. An oral or written report will be given each quarter over a book selected from an assigned list.
Students will study verbal and non-verbal communication. When this course is completed, students and by studying published short stories. Students will also keep a portfolio of their work. This class may be taken more than once.
